The importance of climate change and land use and land management in Africa is profound and multifaceted, reflecting both the continent’s vulnerability to climate change impacts and the critical role that sustainable land use practices play in mitigating these impacts.
Unsustainable land use practices, such as overgrazing, deforestation, and poor agricultural practices, exacerbate soil erosion, reduce soil fertility, and increase vulnerability to droughts and floods. Climate change further intensifies these effects, leading to decreased agricultural productivity and reduced food security.
The “Symposium on Climate Change and Land Use and Land Management in Africa” aims to inform community leaders, and the general public, about the impacts of climate change on land use and land management as well as the potential consequences for Africa’s environment, economies, and societies. It also intends to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, best practices, and research findings on sustainable land use and land management linked with climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in the African continent. The Symposium creates a platform for dialogue among policy-makers, researchers, practitioners, and communities to discuss and formulate policies that promote sustainable land use and land management in an integrated way, i.e. taking into account also the potential for climate resilience and emission reduction.
