Thursday 31st May 2025, Officials concluded the onion trials at the Bulock demonstration site marking the end of the research. Senior Researcher Dr Ebrima Sonko and Research Assistant Lamin F Bojang in collaboration with the women harvested the onions at the garden recording relevant information for analysis. Three different types of water conservation techniques were plotted – Plastic mulch, grass mulch and the normal farmers practice, which were under investigation. During the study, growth parameters were recorded and the yield data which includes onion biomass and weight will be added to the list. Dr Ebrima Sonko in his reaction said the onion trials didn’t perform as expected which resulted to low yields. He attributed this to many factors including termites infestation and weather conditions during vegetation. Dr Sonko revealed they will analyze the data collected and results will be provided that will recommend best conservation practices for the women gardeners. He concluded by thanking development partners federal ministry of education and research Germany BMBF, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences and the West Africa Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Landuse (WASCAL) for their collaboration and support.
